About

Let’s begin with what you probably already know.

There are places in the world where vicious cycles of poverty, discrimination and exploitation eat up people’s lives.

There are organisations and businesses in the world that are dedicated to ending these cycles. They offer the likes of employment in good conditions, fair trade agreements, education and skills training. I suppose you could say that they offer fishing lessons and create a lasting impact on the lives of disadvantaged people in developing countries.

Some of these organisations and businesses are based in Melbourne.

The mission of One Fair City is to exhibit people and places that make a difference and are located in, or originate in, the Melbourne area. My particular focus will be on fair trade business and grass roots organisations; places with the closest link to the people they are helping. Each main post will cover one organisation or business and broadcast their cause, their stories and their hopes for the future.

I believe that businesses and organisations that are dedicated to helping the disadvantaged deserve recognition, and my hope is that this blog will connect them both to each other and to the wider community. I also hope that this blog will promote understanding of the work these places do, and their importance in changing the world.

I don’t offer any expertise in this subject; while I do volunteer for Seven Women, I study Journalism, not International Development! I do know that there are stories worth telling in this area; stories of Melbournians and stories of the people who have had their lives changed.

Feel free to suggest people or places; my main stipulations are that any suggestions must a) have a Melway reference and b) must make a direct difference to the lives of people in developing countries.

  1. Great idea! I’m interested to see the types of places you cover.
